What to bring to a hiking engagement session?

I love having the opportunity to shoot an engagement session while hiking! These sessions are typically a hike of 4 or more miles, round trip. I consult with the happy couple to select a route, plan a timeline for the hike and photos, and then meet them at the trailhead with all my gear. Here are some tips to make sure you have everything in your pack to not only have a safe and fun hike, but also to capture some gorgeous shots at that dreamy alpine lake!

For both the bride and groom, you’ll need to have two outfits. First, your casual clothing. Think of what you would normally wear for a hike and then take it up just one notch. So some nice hiking pants, a nicer outdoorsy top (flannel is always a good choice!), and some sturdy hiking boots. Everything should be clean and photo ready! This is what you’ll be wearing when we meet up and start our hike.

If you and your fiancé are avid hikers or just love being together in the great outdoors, a hiking engagement session can be perfect for you!

Your second outfit will be a bit more formal. I’ll have you do a quick change when we make it to our main photo destination. Whether it’s an overlook with views for miles, an alpine lake, or some other special spot, we’ll spend time here capturing photos you’ll treasure for a lifetime... and maybe even use on your save-the-dates! I always plan for us to arrive at this spot a little before the “golden hour” so we can catch the best light of the day. I love seeing brides in a dress for that extra touch of romance. For the groom, a collared shirt and dress pants with a belt and nice shoes is a great look.

In addition to your two outfits, you’ll want to have a hiking pack with all the essentials. Water and snacks are musts for hiking - and a summit beer or celebratory champagne is always a good idea! I also recommend headlamps and poles since we are often descending during twilight. If there are any other items you’d like to include in your photos, like a picnic blanket or tent, you’ll also need to pack those in.

If you and your fiancé are avid hikers or just love being together in the great outdoors, a hiking engagement session can be perfect for you! I’ll make sure to capture stunning photos while you two enjoy sharing an adventure.
